observational studies on the use of Polydatin/resveratrol as a dermatological treatment for radiotherapy lesions

As said in a previous article,  ARTOI Foundation and the Italian National Council of Research (CNR) recently held a public event and showed several findings about scientific research on Integrated treatments for oncology patients.

These results will be shown in a more exhaustive way at the ICIM Congress on September 2023, but we’d like to preview a bit of them here and in the next article.

The first results we are proud to disclose are about recent observational studies on the use of polydatin/resveratrol as a dermatological treatment for radiation therapy lesions.

Four scientists presented their findings:

The first study was conducted in collaboration with the CNR Translational Pharmacology Institute and San Camillo Hospital in Rome. It evaluated the effect of the topical application of a moisturizing cream containing polydatin to prevent skin rash in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma treated with afatinib.

The results showed that the cream reduced the incidence of grade ≥2 skin toxicity in 41.2% of the 34 patients treated, without any of them having to interrupt treatment due to toxicity.

The other studies were conducted on patients with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy.

In one study, 30 women who had undergone breast cancer surgery were recruited and treated with a topical polydatin cream before and after each radiation therapy session.

All patients completed their treatment without interruption, with 63% experiencing RTOG1 toxicity, 26% RTOG2, and 10% RTOG3.

In another study, 21 breast cancer patients undergoing adjuvant radiation therapy applied a topical polydatin emulsion twice a day, with only one patient experiencing RTOG2 toxicity, and none experiencing RTOG3 or 4 toxicity.

Finally, a study conducted on 18 breast cancer patients undergoing conventional radiation therapy showed reduced or no toxicity in stages 3 and 4, with the emulsion applied 30 minutes and 2 hours after each radiation therapy session and twice a day, including non-treatment days.

Stay tuned for the next findings, and if you’re interested in scientific evidence of Integrative Medicine don’t miss the opportunity to attend ICIM 2023, because these and many other topics will be discussed in depth.
